AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE & 840 Quad-Core Processors

AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE & 840 Quad-Core Processors

Review | January 4, 2011
Today AMD is releasing two new processors for the main-stream market. First up is a new top-end quad-core, the 3.6 GHz Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition. The X4 975 BE is simply a 100 MHz speed bump over the already familiar X4 970 BE with no other design changes. The second new processor is a budget quad-core, the 3.2 GHz Phenom II X4 840.

We saw back in September AMD released six new CPUs to add to their product mix. Today AMD is showcasing three new processors, including a new flagship model, the AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition. The other two processors are a Phenom II X2 565 Black Edition, and an Athlon II X3 455. All three of these processors are simply 100 MHz speed-bumps over previous top-end models.

Technology research firm Canalys reports that when Microsoft sunsets Windows 10 in 2025, it could send as many as 240 million PCs to the scrap heap. Reuters estimates the dump would equate to 480 million kilograms of e-waste.

There are various reasons why your PC may not meet the seemingly arbitrary hardware requirements for Windows 11, such as UEFI, Secure Boot, TPM or even something as simple as the way your OS drive is formatted. (MBR vs. GPT)

With Microsoft officially ending support for Windows 10 in 2025, how many machines will get scrapped as a result? Will there be a mass exodus to Linux? Or like Windows XP, is Windows 10 so popular that users will risk running the OS without regular security updates?

Nearly a year ago nVidia caught a lot of flak for launching what they named the RTX 4080 12GB, so much so they subsequently "unlaunched" it, and then relaunched it a few months later as the 4070 Ti.

Now AMD is facing similar complaints around their newly launched 7800 XT, as when compared to the 6800 XT, is generally outperformed by the previous generation card of the same name.
Quote:
The GCD houses a total of 60 compute units (CUs), and therefore 3840 shaders, or stream processors; that's the same as the RX 6800 (non XT) from the previous generation.
A quick core comparison I believe paints a clear picture, without even looking at shaders or memory. Just as nVidia tried to pass off an AD-104 core as an AD-102 card, AMD is using a Navi 32 core on what was previously a Navi 21 model.

Two and half years after launch, GALAX is finally offering its GeForce RTX 3080 Serious Gaming model at the original MSRP of $699. The cheapest brand-new RTX 3080 costs $899 on Newegg or $1059 on Amazon. That said, $699 for RTX 3080 even 2 years later might still be considered at this price. However, Radeon RX 7900 XT should still be a much better choice despite costing $100 more.

An nVidia card selling for MSRP?!? As your tagline states, What's your game Galax?

nVidia's announcement of the RTX 4090 @ $1599 and 2 flavors of the 4080 @ $1199 for a 16GB version, and $899 for the 12GB card, stating that reductions in GPU pricing is a "thing of the past". But the cheaper 4080 sacrifices more than just 4GB of memory - it's an entirely different GPU with fewer cores and a cut memory interface.

Quote:
As a result, some critics claim the 12GB RTX 4080 is actually a 4070 model in disguise, but with a $400 price increase over the RTX 3070, which originally launched two years ago starting at $499.
Apparently nVidia still has 3080 chips to sell, and no plans to cut the price of that chip from the $699 MSRP it had at launch in Sept 2020.

Is it a wonder EVGA got fed up and cut ties with nVidia?

A shocking report claims that EVGA, a 20-year veteran of the GPU market and one of Nvidia’s biggest partners, is exiting the graphics card business entirely. As one of the most visible brands selling graphics cards to consumers, its exit from the marketplace will have huge ramifications going forward. EVGA will continue to sell its current supply of graphics cards, but will not design new hardware as Nvidia debuts its GeForce RTX 4000 series of GPUs.

The report comes from GamersNexus, a reliable source (and a friend of the PCWorld team) in a 30-minute exposé. The video cites interviews directly with leaders at EVGA and quotes founder and CEO Andrew Han and chief branding officer Joe Darwin. PCWorld finds no reason to doubt the veracity of the information presented.
